What is the Excimer Laser? Patients often ask “How does a laser fix my vision?” In the case of nearsightedness, the laser will remove tissue from the central cornea. To steepen the central curve of the cornea in the case of farsightedness tissue is taken from the peripheral of the eye. In essence, the laser changes the shape of the cornea’s front. The corneal stroma, which is the tissue beneath the corneal epithelium, must be exposed in order to do this. You can do this by creating a corneal fold. The corneal flap is then protected by a corneal flap. LASIK uses a corneal flap that attaches to a hinge. This allows the corneal stroma to be exposed rather than vaporizing epithelial cells.
